Infertility

What is Infertility?

Infertility is the inability of the male or female factor to achieve pregnancy after one year or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Infertility may be caused by a number of factors specific to either partner or a combination of both. Infertility is a public health concern. For many couples trying to conceive, the news of infertility is often so shocking that it ultimately negatively impacts their physical, mental, social, and sexual lives.

Infertility affects up to 15% of couples of childbearing age worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, the estimated prevalence of primary infertility in India ranges from 3.9 to 16.8%.

According to the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction, infertility currently affects approximately 10 to 14% of the Indian population, with higher rates in urban areas, where one in six couples is affected.

Almost 27.5 million couples actively trying to conceive suffer from infertility in India. It is estimated that between 48 million couples and 186 million people worldwide are living with infertility.

With infertility treatment, couples get a renewed hope for starting a family. Approximately 9 out of 10 couples get pregnant after undergoing treatment. The success rates vary depending on the severity of the causes, but knowing that science has advanced to this point gives them the much-needed encouragement to keep hoping for the best.

Male infertility is when a man tries to conceive with his partner but is unable to do so due to problems with ejaculation, lack of or low sperm count, poor sperm morphology, and poor sperm motility. Low testosterone levels, chronic health issues, and lifestyle choices also play a role in male infertility.
